Though many smartphones include one, the colors of the LED are normally limited to red and blue, but not for you, dear Nexus user.Your LED notification light can flash orange, purple, and even turquoise. Customizing Your LED Notifications Without RootingApp developer Reactle has a treat for you with their Light Flow Lite - LED Control app. There are other LED customization apps we've told you about in the past, including LEDBlinker Notifications and Light Manager, but Light Flow best serves our purposes here on our Nexus 5. It also enables you to tune a larger color palette, which really comes in handy on your Nexus 5 since the device allows for that kind of color diversity. Light Flow also has, by far, the cleanest and easiest to use UI, and in my testing, has proven itself to be the most stable and functional of the three apps.

Setting Up Light Flow on Your Nexus 5A quick visit to the Google Play will score you a download of Light Flow Lite, which is the free version, and more than adequate for our needs. The paid version will set you back $2.49 and provides support "for over 600 different notifications," but the free version's support list is also quite extensive, so go free for now and see if you dig it first.Once installed, opening the app will bring you to a permission screen asking you to enable notification access. Agreeing will take you to the settings screen where you can get it done. Android will warn you that doing so will give the app access to information, but worry not—this just provides the app with the ability to interact with your notifications, which it'll need to activate the LED. SettingsThis screen houses a comprehensive list of controls that you will likely never need, particularly on the Nexus 5. I never had cause to change anything in there, and I doubt you will either. You'll want to ensure the 'Enable Light Flow' box at the top is ticked, but other than that, I'd say leave it be.
VolumeThis section allows you to use the app to adjust volume settings for alerts and notifications. This functionality is disabled by default, leaving your phone to follow whatever system settings you've previously established. Again, I never found reason to adjust anything here, and you can let it alone unless you feel the urge to tinker.

NotificationsThis section is where it all happens. Tap here and you'll see a scrollable list of cards. These are the notifications you can customize. The notification will be highlighted if it's active, along with a colored circle on the bottom-left corner of the card indicating the color of the LED alert. Tap one of the cards to customize. There will be six tabs worth of settings you can scroll through when you select a card:Notifications Light Sounds Repeating Sounds Vibration Repeat Vibration I only ever worried about the first two (Notification and Light). The array of settings you'll likely see under the Notification header are:Enable Notification Exclude from sleep mode Clear notification style Enable popup Switch screen off You might see expanded options for different cards (for example, the alert for low battery allows you to set the battery threshold). Ticking the first box marked Enable notification will turn on Light Flow functionality. Now for the fun part—customizing the LED light.Scroll to the next tab on the right marked Light and tick the Enable light option. Afterword, you can adjust everything from the color to the flash rate and duration. There are eighteen colors you can select from cyan to sky blue, and I was able to successfully display every single one, so go crazy. One word of warning... if you decide to test a notification by tapping the test tubes icon in the upper-right corner of this screen, the app will tell you that test mode is enabled and the LED will begin flashing the appropriate color within five seconds. If you test and the light doesn't illuminate, don't fret, the Nexus 5 screen needs to be off before the LED lights up.Also, sometimes it takes much longer than five seconds for the LED to light up in test mode. I once clocked in forty-five seconds before my LED gave me the the indigo flash I was looking for.

Advanced Functions in Light FlowIf you're looking to squeeze a little more out of Light Flow, there are a few more tricks the app can offer you. There is an icon at the top of the Notifications card screen that allows you to add a contact to your list of notifications. If you do, tapping that contact will provide you with a list of alerts you can adjust specifically from that person. If you want your phone's LED to flash bright pink when you get a SMS or email from your sweety, this is the place to do it. Another feature I had fun with is Light Flow's ability to control the vibration pattern of your alerts. When on the customization screen for your selected notification card, scrolling to the far right will reveal a Vibration tab. Ticking the Enable vibrate box allows you toy with with some options. You can change the vibration pattern of a specific alert (1 medium vibrate, 1 short 1 medium, etc.). The Nexus 5's spectrum of LED notification colors is a great feature, albeit a slightly hidden one. Light Flow is the perfect way to bring this functionality to the forefront of the user experience with outstanding results. With a little customization, you can use your LED notifier as a looking glass into what's going on in your phone without ever having to touch the power button.

No longer do we have to slog through dial menus or trudge through every single message to get to the next. We can just look at our messages, right there on our screens, organized neatly like emails or text messages.Yet still, in these future times, many of us are deprived of the luxury of visual voicemail. What sets YouMail apart from other services is the greetings.This is where things get fun.Navigate to the Greetings tab on the bottom and embrace the possibilities. Here you can record a new greeting by tapping the plus sign at the top or use one of the many greetings they've provided for you. If you tap a greeting from the list, you can select a greeting you've recorded or one of the pre-recorded greetings as your default greeting that all callers will hear. Now things get awesome.Do you see the Add Contact icon when you select a greeting? Tap that and you can select someone from your contacts to be associated with a greeting. Do this, and they and only the contacts you select, will hear this greeting. This means you can absolutely set up specific greetings for specific people.For example, I've recorded a standard vanilla greeting and set that as the default. Then I went through and recorded greetings for specific contacts. I created a goofy greeting for my best friend, a sweet greeting for my lady friend, and a mother greeting for my ma. I've only added the corresponding contracts to their corresponding greetings, so only they hear those greetings. Anyone else calling hears the default. If it sounds impressive, that's because it is. And it will make people think you're a sorcerer; especially if you have two separate people in a room with two separate greetings call you in sequence.

Ditching Unwanted Callers for GoodIt gets better. Scroll through the available prerecorded greetings and you'll find one that reads Number Out of Service. That greeting is exactly what it sounds like—the ubiquitous "do-doo-doo" noise with the accompanying robot informing the caller your number is out of service. They will not be able to leave a message.You can add any contact to this greeting you wish, but you can do what I do and finally give those pesky bill collectors the slip. If you ever get a voicemail or missed call from one of those coin hounds, simply find them in Messages (if they left one), or in the Hang Ups tab, because YouMail tracks your callers even if they hang up without leaving a message.Long press on their name or number and select Ditch. Believe me when I tell you from an enthusiastic personal experience that it's enough to trick the money hunters to stop calling. Free at last! You can check out who you've ditched at any time by selecting the People tab on the bottom and selecting Ditched from the drop down menu at the top.

Halloween is right around the corner, so it's only right that we get into the holiday mood with my favorite revenant creatures of the night—zombies (or zombis, if you prefer). So, if you're licking your lips over wearing that gruesome living dead Halloween costume of yours this year, a zombie movie marathon could help curb your flesh-eating appetite, but you can't really watch zombie flicks everywhere you go.What's the next best way to suppress your hunger for brains? Zombie games, and here are my top ten free zombified iOS games on my iPhone right now. Some of them may offer in-app purchases, but for the most part, you can play these without ever spending a dime.

#1. Into the DeadNot your typical zombie game, Into the Dead is an endless runner version, with very impressive graphics, that allows you to pick up crates full of guns and ammo to use on the undead. As you earn points (for distance and kills), you'll be able to purchase perks before each run— armed starts, ammo boost, dog companion, and more. Notable Mention: If you want another runner, check out Running Dead, which is very similar except that there's an aerial view as you run through an abandoned town of zombies.

#2. Dead TriggerThis first person shooter features all the blood and gore you'll ever need, as well as a large arsenal of weapons. As you progress through the levels in Dead Trigger, you'll earn money to buy weapons, ammunition, and health. You can enjoy the regular story mode or take on random missions, but whatever you pick, you'll be sure to encounter a load of zombies to kill.

#3. Age of Zombies LiteAs all around bad-ass commando Barry Steakfries, you'll travel back to prehistoric times in this arcade shooter game. In Age of Zombies Lite, you'll not only have to kill hordes of pesky zombies—you'll also have to take on an undead boss T-Rex. There is also a pro version of Age of Zombies for $0.99, which gives you more levels, but the lite version should be good enough to hold you over until Halloween ends.

#4. Contract Killer: ZombiesAs a contract killer, your job as a wheelchair-ridden old guy is to protect survivors at all cost and kill the zombies in the way. As you play on in Contract Killer: Zombies, you'll be given an arsenal of sniper rifles, assault guns, and grenade launchers. There is also a sequel available, if you dig it that much.

#5. Plants vs. Zombies 2Sequel to the original tower-defense strategy game, Plants vs. Zombies 2 takes you back in time to fight ancient zombies, with your legion of killer plants. As you push through the game, you'll be able to collect power-ups as well as brand new plants and zombies.

#6. Zombie HighwayAs you drive down the barren desert in Zombie Highway, your only objective is to survive and drive as far as you can. It won't be easy, as zombies will pounce on your car as you drive near them, so you'll either have to knock em off or shoot em off. With patience, you'll rack up better weapons, faster cars and deadlier zombies. There is also a Zombie Highway: Driver's Ed, a spinoff of Zombie Highway, but unfortunately it's not free.

#7. Gunner ZStorm through the infected city with a heavy duty armored Hummer in Gunner Z, blasting the mutant zombie soldiers with an arsenal of machine guns and bombs, all with a night vision view to match.

#8. Call of Mini: SniperPerched behind a protective barrier in Call of Mini: Sniper Lite, you can shoot down zombies in different terrains such as schools, carnivals, and playgrounds. Save the humans and get them into safety as you hold the horde off. If the zombies get to you, it's all over. The lite version has some limitations, but lucky for you, the Call of Mini: Sniper pro version is currently free, so make sure to grab it before the deal ends.

#9. Dead AheadReminiscent of old arcade games, Dead Ahead follows you as you ride through the undead streets on a motorcycle, taking on hordes of zombies at a time. The longer you play, the more you can upgrade your bike and weapons, making the ride to hell a bit easier.

#10. The Walking DeadJust like the TV show, The Walking Dead game has consequences to every action you take. As you progress through, you'll be asked to make quick decisions that can impact not only your life, but that of others. While the first chapter of the game is free, you'll have to purchase the rest if you want to continue playing. And trust me, you will.

One of the most exciting additions to iOS 12 for iPhones is called Shortcuts, a tool integrated with Siri to help you get things done faster. While there are a few recommended shortcuts available to you in Siri's settings in iOS 12, the Shortcuts app brings the functionality of Workflow to Siri so you can build your own custom actions or select from the gallery of available shortcuts.By default, the Shortcuts app is not installed automatically after updating to iOS 12 unless you already had the Workflow app, which would be taken over. Step 1: Start with the Shortcuts AppIf you've ever used Workflow to automate tasks, whether you've just chosen workflows from the galleries or created your own, you'll feel right at home in Shortcuts. As soon as you open the app and bypass the welcome screen, you'll see that it looks exactly like Workflow's interface. Plus, if you have any workflows on your iPhone already, they will show up in your Library in the Shortcuts app. If you've never really played around with Workflow before, the "Gallery" tab is the best place to be. Here, you'll see all of the available workflows you can use right now, which numbers over 300 workflows, and after installing a few and seeing how they work, they'll give you a better idea how to create your own workflows and shortcuts.Apple provides collections of similar workflows in categories such as Essentials, Morning Routine, iPhone X, Featured, Explore Apple Music, Read It Later, Photography, and the list just keeps going. These seem to be the same as the collections and workflows that are available in the Workflow app, indicating that the Workflow app itself might disappear when iOS 12 is released in September.

Step 2: Choose a Shortcut from the GalleryOnce you find a workflow you'd like to try out, tap on it. On the next screen, you can tap "Show Actions" to see what this workflow involves. To add it, just tap "Get Shortcut." As an example, I'm using the "Play Playlist" workflow, but you can choose anything. The "Calculate Tip" and "Open in Chrome" workflows that I covered for Workflow are good ones you can play around with too.For the one I chose, my goal is to play and shuffle my "Peter Gabriel" playlist using the custom "Play Peter Gabriel" command with Siri, which will start playing the playlist in the Music app. It won't actually open the Music app, which is nice since that's not really needed. Step 3: Grant Access (If Necessary)After getting the workflow, you may need to "Grant Access" to whatever app or service is required. In my example, that would be Apple Music activity as well as my media library.

Step 4: Configure the ShortcutEach workflow will work differently, but Apple tries to make it as easy as possible to get working right away, so you will likely have to configure the workflow right away by answering a simple question or two. In my example, I need to choose a playlist. Tapping "Choose" shows me a list of all my playlists; Folders appear first, followed by regular and smart playlists combined in alphabetical order. After choosing one of my playlists, all that's left to do is hit "Done," and the workflow will be added to your "Library" tab.

Step 5: Use Your New ShortcutAfter configuring your new workflow, how do you use it? Well, you haven't done any deep customization yet, so there are only a few things you can do right now to use the workflow. First, open up the Shortcuts app and tap on the workflow from the "Library" tab. That will make the workflow immediately run. Think of this more as a test to make sure it's working like it's supposed to. You likely won't want to open up the Shortcuts app every time you want to start one of your shortcuts, which is where the second method comes into play.On your home screen, you can use 3D Touch on the Shortcuts app icon to show the widget, which lists your first four workflows. As you can see below, my "Play Playlist" workflow is not visible, so this doesn't help me out much. That's because it only shows the first four workflows in your Shortcuts library.

Step 6: Add & Use the Shortcuts Widget (Optional)By default, any new workflow you add in the Shortcuts app will be visible in the Shortcuts widget. However, as you can see above, the home screen widget is very limited, but the Today View widget is a lot more helpful.The Shortcuts widget is not added to your Today View by default, so you'll need to do that yourself. Using 3D Touch on the Shortcuts app icon on the home screen, open the home screen widget, then tap "Add Widget."If you don't have 3D Touch or don't like to use it, you can swipe right from the first home screen page, lock screen, or notifications window, then tap on "Edit" at the bottom of the Today View page. Tap the "+" icon next to Shortcuts, then hit "Done." Now, whenever you swipe right from the first home screen page, lock screen, or notifications window to view the Today View screen, you'll see the widget at the bottom (you can rearrange widgets in the "Edit" screen). If you don't see your workflow right away, tap "Show More" to see the rest. To use it, just tap on the workflow. If you tap "Manage Shortcuts" in the widget, you'll see all of your workflows in the Shortcuts app. Here, you can check or uncheck workflows to include in the widget as well as reorganize them by dragging and dropping from the three-lined icon.

Step 7: Customize Your Shortcut (Optional)Sometimes, the default options Apple provides for a workflow aren't enough to get the job done right. For instance, in my "Play Playlist" example, I may want to shuffle the playlist or disable shuffle altogether. To see what changes you can make, tap the ellipsis (•••) icon on the workflow you want to edit in the Shortcuts app.As you can see below, there's not much for me to edit or change with the "Play Playlist" workflow. I can tap "Playlist" to change the playlist, turn shuffle "Off" or shuffle "Songs," or repeat one song, all songs, or none of them. Tap the play button to test out your changes, then "Done' to save them. You can also pull up the search bar to search or browse for more actions that you can add.Don't Miss: Always-Updated List of iOS App URL Scheme Names for Shortcuts That is a very simple example of what a workflow can do. To see something more complicated, the below screenshots show what the workflow for my "Calculate Tip" shortcut looks like. There's a lot to change here!

Step 8: Change Your Shortcut's Settings (Optional)When you're customizing your workflow, you'll probably notice the toggles icon under "Done." Tapping that will take you to the workflow's settings. Here, you can change the name of the workflow, edit its icon, customize the shortcut further, add a Siri shortcut, hide in the widget, show in the share sheet, add an icon to the home screen, share the shortcut, and more.

Step 9: Add a Shortcut to Your Home Screen (Optional)One of the most exciting settings in this menu is the "Add to Home Screen" option, which adds a shortcut icon to your home screen, just like you can with webpages in Safari. Tapping the option will show the data URL in Safari. Once there, tap the share sheet icon, then "Add to Home Screen." Next, you'll be able to name your home screen shortcut anything you want. Once you do, tap "Add," and you'll find your shortcut's icon on your home screen. Tap it to start the workflow.

Step 10: Change Your Shortcut's Name & Icon (Optional)If you don't like the default name, icon symbol, or icon color, you can change those. Tapping "Name" will let you do exactly what it implies, and tapping "Icon" will show you all the icon options.For the icon, there are 15 colors to choose from in the "Color" tab. To change the icon shape, you just hunt for a new one in the "Glyph" tab. You can even take a photo or choose one from your Photos gallery. However, none of these options for the name or icon will change the home screen icon if you already added one. You'll have to delete that icon off your home screen, make the edits, then add the icon to your home screen.

Step 11: Create a Custom Siri Phrase for Your Shortcut (Optional)This is the best part and the feature that Apple highlighted at WWDC 2018. While most of the items above you can perform in the Workflow app, you cannot add Siri shortcut phrases except in the Shortcuts app.You may, at one point, receive a suggestion to add a particular shortcut to Siri, but to make one yourself, tap "Add to Siri" from your workflow's Settings page. Next, tap the red record button to say a phrase that will be registered with Siri. If Siri didn't hear you correctly, tap "Re-Record Phrase" to try again. When finished, tap "Done." Back in your workflow's Settings screen, you'll see the Siri phrase you added instead of the "Add to Siri" option. To use your new Siri shortcut, use the phrase with Siri using the Side or Home button shortcut, "Hey Siri." or "Type to Siri" to start the workflow. In this case, playing my selected playlist will begin in my Music app.

Step 12: Add a Share Sheet Shortcut (Optional)Aside from the widget, home screen icon, and Siri, you can also create a shortcut in the share sheet for your workflow. This is the least convenient option, but it may come in handy with specific workflows. My "Play Playlist" workflow isn't the best example here, but it'll at least show you how it's done.From the workflow's Settings page, make sure "Show in Share Sheet" is toggled on. Additionally, you can tap "Accepts" to limit the type of content input that can be run from within another app. By default, it will accept everything. For the "My Playlist" workflow, any app that I'm in wouldn't need access to any of these, so "Deselect All" would be okay here.Limiting the type of content that a workflow will accept streamlines sharing options in an app, by hiding workflows that aren't relevant to the app. For example, a workflow that accepts only contacts won't appear as a sharing extension in the Maps app.
— Apple Once you've enabled the share sheet option, tap the share icon in Shortcuts to enable the Action Extension in the share sheet options. On the bottom row, swipe to the end and tap "More." From the list, toggle on "Shortcuts" and tap "Done." To use your new Action Extension, tap the share sheet when in an app, then tap "Shortcuts" from the bottom row. This will open up the Shortcuts list of workflows. Tap on the one you want to play, and it will start the workflow in the Shortcuts app. You can exit the Shortcuts app afterward. While my example here wasn't very good, it would be much more helpful in other scenarios. For example, whenever you want to open a page you're viewing in Safari directly in Google Chrome instead. More Functionality to Come!This is just the basics of using the new Shortcuts app in iOS 12. You really won't be able to grasp its power until you start playing around with things in the "Gallery" and, eventually, tinkering with your own workflows.Shortcuts you make can also be recommended by Siri based on your location, the time of day, and whether you're walking, running, driving, or flying. These are figured out locally on your iPhone itself, so you don't have to worry about any privacy issues. As a result, you'll just need to download the modified mixer_paths.xml file I created to begin.Download the modified mixer__paths.xml file

Step 2: Replace Your Existing File & RebootNext up, open your favorite root-enabled file browser, then navigate to the /system/etc/ folder. From here, long-press the existing mixer_paths.xml file, then choose "Rename" from the context menu. After that, add a ".bak" to the end of the file name, then press "OK." From here, head to your Download folder and copy the modified mixer_paths.xml file that you grabbed from Step 1. Next, head back to /system/ect/, then paste the modded file into this folder. After that, long-press the newly-copied mixer_paths.xml file, then choose "Permissions" from the menu. Make sure that the Owner category is set to "Read" and "Write," while all other categories are set to just "Read." When you're done there, reboot your phone to make the changes take effect.
Step 3: Balance the SpeakersWhen you get back up, you'll already notice that your phone is outputting sound through both speakers, but the speakers won't be balanced properly, nor will the sound be split into left and right channels. To fix this, you'll have to run two shell commands.These commands will need to be executed every time you reboot your phone, and there are two ways of doing this: First, you can simply run the commands in Terminal Emulator after each reboot, and second, you can have Tasker automatically run the commands upon device boot.

Method 1: Use Terminal Emulator to Balance Them ManuallyIf you don't own Tasker, or if you're not comfortable with the Android automation app, start by downloading a free app called Terminal Emulator.Download Terminal Emulator from the Google Play Store Open the app, then type su and hit enter. From there, tap "Grant" on the Superuser access request, then you'll be ready to send the speaker-balancing commands. Next, just copy the following commands, then paste them into Terminal Emulator one by one, hitting return after each:echo 0x210f > /sys/kernel/debug/tfa98xx-34/regs/06-AUDIO_CTR echo 0x8093 > /sys/kernel/debug/tfa98xx-34/regs/04-I2SREG # right channel only When you're done there, you'll have true stereo sound—but remember, you'll have to run these commands after each reboot to balance out your speakers. So I'd suggest copying the above commands and saving them in your favorite note-taking app.

Method 2: Use Tasker to Balance Them AutomaticallyIf you already own Tasker, you can automate the process of balancing out your speakers after each reboot. To start, create a new profile, select "Event" as the trigger, then choose "System" and tap "Device boot." From here, tap your back button, then choose "New Task" when prompted. Next, add an action to this task by tapping the + button, selecting "Code," then choosing "Run Shell." After that, add a second action, and repeat this same process with the second command. When you're done there, tap your back button once, then press the play button in the bottom-right corner.
