News: eBay Vulnerability Allows Scammers to Attack Android & iOS with Malicious Programs

News: eBay Vulnerability Allows Scammers to Attack Android & iOS with Malicious Programs

Researchers have discovered a "severe vulnerability" that allows attackers to use eBay to distribute malware, and the online auction company has no plans to fix the problem.eBay users are not permitted to insert JavaScript code in their listings, to prevent scammers from installing malware or phishing programs on your device. However, eBay's filters seem unable to catch JavaScript code generated using JSFuck, which creates working scripts using only six characters, and is able to sneak past the eBay filters.
Since there isn't a fix for this yet, all we can really tell you to do is BE CAREFUL. Don't click on eBay links from unknown or untrusted sources. If you're on an eBay page and it asks you to install something, make sure you do not install it. Scammers will usually try to tempt you with a discount or promotion, but if they ask you to download an app or program to get that discount, you can usually bet that it's bogus.Scammers could use the information they get from these malicious programs to steal your financial information, hijack your Facebook and Google accounts via their apps, other accounts linked to your device, and spread malware. Malicious programs on eBay will disguise themselves as a download for an app to receive discounts. Image via Check Point Software The vulnerability was discovered by researchers at Check Point Software back in December. They didn't hear back from eBay until January 16, 2016, which said that it wasn't planning to address the concern, and gave no reasoning for its decision. So, once again, make sure you're extra careful about what you click on when it comes to eBay. Hopefully the company will wise up and fix this problem sooner rather than later. But until then, remember that—as cliché as it sounds—if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

ProtonMail 101: How to Customize Swipe Actions for Messages

ProtonMail 101: How to Customize Swipe Actions for Messages

There are a couple swipe gestures in ProtonMail for Android and iOS that let you swipe right on an email to mark it as spam or swipe left to trash it. If you don't get a lot of spam or don't delete a lot of messages, it's easy enough to changes these gestures to perform another action. To get started, just open up ProtonMail, sign in, and tap on the hamburger icon (it's three stacked horizontal lines) in the top left of the app. When the side menu appears, select "Settings." Scroll down until you see the Swipe Actions (Android) or Message Swipe Actions (iOS). Here, you'll have two options to choose from:Swipe Left to Right (aka swipe right) Swipe Right to Left (aka swipe left) The available settings on iOS using an iPhone X. Tap on the gesture you want to change, then simply choose a new option from the list. You can choose between trashing a message, marking a message as spam, archiving a message, or starring a message. Keep in mind that any changes you make here will apply to all of your devices using ProtonMail. So, if you change the swipe gestures on your iPhone, they will also change on your Android tablet. The available settings on Android using a Google Pixel. Don't Miss: Change Your ProtonMail Display Name That Shows Up in Emails

Option 1: TrashMessages you trash will be moved to the "Trash" folder. However, once you're in the "Trash" folder, you will not be able to use the swipe gesture again to un-trash it. In fact, swipe gestures don't work at all in the "Trash" folder on Android, but the secondary gesture will work on iOS.To un-trash a message, you will have to go into the message itself to move it manually. On Android, you can also long-press on a message in the "Trash" folder, then hit the folder icon to move it to the "Inbox" or another folder. However, in iOS, you can only do that to move it into a custom folder.

Option 2: SpamWhen you junk a message with the swipe gesture, it will be moved to the "Spam" folder. Once inside the "Spam" folder, you can't use the swipe gesture to mark it as not a spam email. On Android, no swipe gestures work at all in the "Spam" folder, but the secondary gesture works on iOS.If you want to mark a message as not spam, you will have to go into the message itself to move it out of the folder. On Android, you can also long-press on a message in the "Spam" folder, then hit the folder icon to move it to the "Inbox" or another folder. However, in iOS, you can only do that to move it into a custom folder.

Option 3: ArchiveEmails you archive with a swipe gesture will be moved to the "Archive" folder. Likewise, you can't use the gesture again to un-archive it. However, secondary gestures will work on both Android and iOS, and the archiving swipe gesture on Android will turn into a trashing gesture, no matter if your other gesture is for trashing or not.You have to un-archive messages in the "Archive" folder in the message itself. On Android, you can also long-press on a message in the "Archive" folder, then hit the folder icon to move it to the "Inbox" or another folder. However, in iOS, you can only do that to move it into a custom folder.

Option 4: StarWhen staring a message, a star will be added to it and it will appear in the "Starred" folder. However, you cannot use the same swipe gesture to un-star a message on iOS, only on Android. That has to be done manually in the message itself on iOS, even though the swipe gesture appears (it won't un-star it). Also, if you're in the "Starred" folder, the swipe gesture you have set to "Star" will do nothing at all on iOS, and on Android, no swipe gestures work in this folder. Likely, ProtonMail will update its apps to function better with swipe gestures, fixing some of the issues with swipes not working in certain folders or not working at all. So stay tuned. How To: Swap the Back & Recents Keys on Your Samsung Galaxy S6

How To: Swap the Back & Recents Keys on Your Samsung Galaxy S6
The buttons on most Android devices are laid out (from left to right) in a Back, Home, Recent Apps format. Samsung is the lone exception to this rule, which flip-flops them, so this can make for an inconsistent experience if you own multiple Android devices. But thanks to a free app from developer YS Liang, the Back and Recents keys on your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge can be switched. Even better, the app does not require root or any special permissions, so anyone can change the layout of their capacitive buttons.

Step 1: Install "All in One Gestures"Liang's app is called All in one Gestures, and it's available on the Google Play Store for free. Search for the app by name to get it installed, or head directly to the install page at this link.

Step 2: Enable the Accessibility PluginWhen you first launch the app, you'll be shown a changelog. Tap "OK" on this message, then you'll be taken to the app's main menu. From here, head to the "Hard Keys" tab, then toggle the switch at the top of the screen. At this point, All in one Gestures will inform you that you'll need to enable the app's accessibility plugin to use these features, so tap the message at the bottom of the screen to do just that. On the next screen, select the "All in one Gestures" entry, then toggle the switch at the top of the screen. After that, press "Turn On," then hit your device's back button twice to head back to the app.

Step 3: Swap the Functionality of Your Back & Recent KeysWith the accessibility plugin turned on, you can now enable the Hard Keys features in All in one Gestures. So again, toggle the switch at the top of the screen. After that, tap the "Single Tap" option under the Back key header, then select "Recent Apps" from the list. Next, tap the floating + button near the bottom of the screen, then tick the box next to the "Recent Apps" option and press "OK." After that, select the "Single Tap" option that you'll now find under the Recent Apps header, then select "Back" from the list. At this point, the functionality of your Back and Recents buttons will be switched, so your button layout will be the same as most other Android devices. With that done, you can also shut off the backlight for these buttons so that so it's not so obvious that their functionality has been swapped.Has swapping these buttons made your Galaxy S6 more comfortable to use? How To: 10 Unique & Practical Ways to Repurpose Your Old Hard Disk Drives

How To: 10 Unique & Practical Ways to Repurpose Your Old Hard Disk Drives

At one point in the '90s, about fifty percent of the CDs produced worldwide had an AOL logo. About fifty percent of the CDs in my home still have that AOL promise of 500 free hours on them. Though they never got me to join their internet service, I did get a lifetime supply of coasters. Thanks to the rise of high-speed internet access and bigger and better hard drives, there's no reason for companies to snail mail any more of those obnoxious plastic discs. However, cloud storage is threatening to make your hard disk drives at home a thing of the past, too. Your data is safe in the cloud, away from things like burglars and Coca-Cola, and you don't have to worry about hardware failures. So, what can you do with all of those internal and external HDDs filling up your house? They're not really good for drink coasters, but there are some other clever ways to repurpose them into something useful. Here are just a few DIY project ideas for those old HDDs.

Hard Drive Desk ClockOne of the most popular ways to reuse an HDD is to turn it into a clock. Hard drives make great desk clocks because of their shape and sleek looking design. Image via instructables.com The recycled HDD clock pictured above is a pretty basic project, with few modifications and a simple installation of a clock mechanism with a ¾-inch long shaft, which you can get from pretty much any hardware or hobby store.Want a different twist? Try this vertical HDD clock that uses computer keys to display the hours. Image via instructables.com Get creative. There's no shortage of examples you can check out for inspiration.

Hard Drive SpeakersIt may sound strange, but with a few tweaks, you can turn a hard drive into a speaker. HDDs use some of the same technology for that's used in a traditional loudspeaker, specifically the arm. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
All you need to do is apply the right waveform and sound will be produced. To turn your HDD into a speaker, you'll need to solder a wire to the hard drive's terminal and another one to its spindle motor terminal. The final part is connecting the wires to the speaker output of your stereo and voilà, you will have sound! Image via instructables.com You can also flip it on its side to make a vertical speaker and give it a cooler look.

Hard Drive Secret SafeIf you want to keep your project low-key, try your hand at this nifty hard drive safe. The project is fairly simple, using a few tools to empty out the HDD completely, which leaves room to stash valuables such as money and jewelry. Image via instructables.com If you still have the computer from which the hard drive came, you can put it back into the computer for even better security. Image via instructables.com They'll never know.
Hard Drive Laser ShowOne of the more unique projects from a HDD turns it into a laser oscilloscope. The hard drive's voice coil circuit is hacked in order for it to be connected to a stereo output, like with the speaker project. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Mirrors are then placed around the HDD, which reflect the light to create an awesome laser show. This project is a little more difficult and requires some soldering skills, but the result is well worth it.

Hard Drive Wind ChimesMade from several hard drive platters, this project puts together a bunch of different parts to create a wind chime. If you can get your hands on this many hard drives, you can easily grab some string, drill a hole in each platter and create yourself a pretty interesting outdoor decoration. Image via staticflickr.com Not only does it chime out, but it also creates strange glimmers when the sun shines through it, making it infinitely more awesome than your neighbors' boring old regular wind chimes.

Hard Drive GrinderFor something that's easy to make and functional, why not turn an old HDD into a grinder? Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
All you have to do is rearrange the platters so they're directly on top of each other, then cut a piece of sandpaper to the right shape and glue it on top. Image via wonderhowto.com It won't spin fast enough to do any real damage, but it does have enough torque to sharpen a knife, so watch your fingers!

Hard Drive Tesla TurbineWant something a little faster? This hard drive turned Tesla turbine runs on compressed air and spins up to 15,000 rpm. Image via instructables.com You will need a few less common tools, including a milling machine and a lathe. The process consists of drilling ventilation holes in the hard drive platters, then making a shaft from a piece of aluminum. The platters are placed onto the shaft with spacers between them to create a rotor. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
When fluid is pumped into the chamber, it makes the platters turn, which causes the shaft to rotate. This one may not have a huge output, but a larger version can generate enough power to run a car or plane.

Hard Drive Cotton Candy MachineIf your hard drive still turns on, you can use a soda can, six bicycle spokes, a plastic bowl, and a flat metal tin to turn it into your very own cotton candy machine. Granted, it's probably not totally sanitary, but it's still pretty awesome. Image via staticflickr.com You build it by using the bicycle spokes to create legs for the metal tin. The soda can is placed on top of the spindle to hold the fuel, and when you fill the tin with sugar, the spinning motion of the hard drive turns the sugar into threads of cotton candy. Image via staticflickr.com The original instructions are in Chinese, but you can find a step-by-step translation here.
Hard Drive Mic StandIf you record a lot of videos or audio tracks, a hard drive makes a pretty good mic stand. After taking out all the internal parts of the hard drive, the wires from the mic are soldered onto the switch and output jack so it can be connected to any recording device. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
The mic is held by a clamping pipe hanger that's bolted to the hard drive. It's powered by a 1.5 volt AA battery that lasts quite a while, and the whole project costs about $10, assuming you've already got the mic and recording equipment.
Hard Drive Cell Phone ChargerAnd finally, the project that most of us are more likely to actually use: a hard drive turned cell phone charger that also functions as an LED desk lamp and hidden flash drive. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
This project is a lot more involved, but most of the parts are pretty simple. You can find more details and a downloadable schematic here. What's your favorite new use for old hard drives? Let us know in the comments below.
