How To: Set Beep Alerts to Warn You of Missed Messages

How To: Set Beep Alerts to Warn You of Missed Messages
Many phones these days are being manufactured without a notification LED—it's a cost-cutting move, and it's really not an essential component. However, the notification light on Android devices has traditionally alerted users to any missed messages, and this is functionality you can't get without the proper hardware. For a software solution, developer Eugene Popovich came up with an app that will make your phone beep periodically when you have an unread notification. So if you're out of earshot when your phone beeps the first time, you'll hear it when you get back when the intermittent notification goes off.

Step 1: Install Missed Notifications ReminderIf you're tired of missing out on messages that came in while you were away from your phone, start by installing Missed Notifications Reminder.Install Missed Notifications Reminder for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Grant PermissionsWhen you first launch the app, you'll have to grant notification access so that Missed Notifications Reminder can know when you have an unread notification. To do that, tap the "Manage Access" button, enable the Missed Notification Reminder entry on the following screen, and press "Allow" on the popup. When you're done there, tap your back button to head back to the app. If you're running Android Marshmallow or higher, there are two more options you'll need to enable. To start, tap the "Grant Required Permissions" button, then press "Allow" on the subsequent popup. This will ensure that Missed Notifications Reminder can scan all of your notifications. From here, you'll see a message explaining that Marshmallow's battery optimization feature may interfere with the main functionality of this app. This would only happen when your device is in Doze Mode, but if that were the case, you won't receive the intermittent reminder when you have a missed notification. So if you'd like to avoid this, tap the "Manage Battery Optimization" button, then use the drop-down menu on the following screen to select "All apps." From there, choose Missed Notifications Reminder in the list, then set it to "Don't optimize" and press "Done."

Step 3: Choose a Reminder Interval & Select AppsWith the proper permissions now enabled, you're ready to set up the main functionality. For starters, make sure the "Enabled" switch in the Reminder Interval section is turned on. Once you've done that, use the slider to set a reminder interval, which is how long your device will wait before it beeps again to notify you of a missed notification. After that, tap the "Select Applications" button, then you'll see a list of all your installed apps. Go through this list and tick the boxes next to any app that you would like to get notification reminders for.

Step 4: Set Quiet Times (Optional)At this point, you're all set up and ready to go, but you may want to enable quiet times so that your phone doesn't intermittently beep while you're sleeping. To do that, tap the three-dot menu button at the top of the screen, then tick the box next to "Show advanced settings."Now, if you scroll down a little further on the main menu, you'll see some extra settings. These include the ability to choose a custom ringtone for your intermittent reminder, or even add vibration. But the main thing to look for here is the "Custom Scheduler" section. Enable this, then use the slider beneath it to set a "Working Period," which is the only time that your phone will beep periodically.
Get Reminders for Missed NotificationsFrom now on, whenever you have an unread notification, your phone will beep every so often. Then, once you've read or dismissed the notification, your phone will stop beeping intermittently.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: 5 Settings to Change in Firefox Mobile to Improve Privacy & Security

How To: 5 Settings to Change in Firefox Mobile to Improve Privacy & Security
Unlike many browsers, Firefox gives a lot of control to the user. By default, Firefox does a great job of balancing security and performance. However, within the app's settings, you can modify options to shift this balance in one direction or another. For those looking to shift it toward security, here are few suggestions. These suggestions don't require you to install anything extra — they're all accessible by default and can be altered with just a few taps (with one exception). While tweaking these settings won't make your browser a fortified shield against the dangers of the web, it will make it much stronger than the default settings — not to mention most of Firefox's competition.Don't Miss: 3 Reasons Firefox Quantum is the Best Browser for Android

1. Always-on Tracking ProtectionTrackers, which usually come in the form of cookies, gather information about you across the various sites you visit. This information can then be sent to data collection sites, where it's used by advertisers to create personalized ads to display while you browse. While some users don't mind forgoing their privacy to advertisers, blocking trackers also has security implications. Cookies are sometimes used by hackers to gather data about users, and the same information provided to advertisers can be used by malicious individuals. To combat this, Firefox offers Tracking Protection. These protections utilize a list provided by Disconnect which identifies and blocks known trackers, including some which are used to cause harm to your device. Tracking protection is enabled by default, but only for private browsing mode. So you'll probably want to switch this to always on so that even when normally browsing, you're protected against trackers. To enable always-on tracking protection, open Firefox and tap the menu button in the upper-right corner of your display. Choose "Settings," then select "Privacy". Finally, tap "Tracking Protection" and choose "Enabled." From now on, you can enjoy Tracking Protection while normally and privately browsing.

2. Turn on 'Do Not Track'After the public learned of the dangers of cookies and trackers, many browsers began including an option known as "Do Not Track." Once enabled, your browser will send a request to any website you visit asking that it not track you. However, this request is completely voluntary, making its effectiveness minimal at best.Nonetheless, it doesn't negatively impact performance nor cause any additional harm to enable the feature, which is turned off by default in Firefox.Head to Settings and choose "Privacy". The first option will be the toggle next to "Do Not Track" — just tap it to enable it. Now, all sites you visit will receive this request. Fortunately, thanks to Tracking Protection, you don't have to depend on the website complying.

3. Prevent Cookies from Third PartiesNot all cookies track you across multiple websites. Some cookies gather information about you for the site you are visiting to improve your browsing experience the next time. For example, some e-commerce sites will use cookies to personalize the products shown on the main page when you visit again. However, like trackers, cookies are still susceptible to hacking and require that users give up a lot of information. At the same time, cookies are heavily integrated into some sites, which may prevent blocking all of them, since it can cause the site to not load properly. Therefore, the compromise is to block only third-party cookies.Third-party cookies are any cookie not from the site you are visiting. Typically, third-party cookies are used by social media and advertisers to gather information about how you use the website. By blocking only these cookies, most sites will operate normally and a little less of your data is gathered.Head to Settings and select "Privacy". Choose the "Cookies" option and select "Enabled, excluding 3rd party." Now, all cookies are allowed except those coming from third-party sites.

4. Disable WebRTCWeb Real-Time Communication (WebRTC) is a standard which enables live communication within the browser. Firefox uses WebRTC to provide features such as video chat and voice calling. However, for VPN users, WebRTC has a glaring flaw.Don't Miss: Android Security 101: Secure Your Data Connections & Browse the Web SafelyWebsites using the standard can obtain the device's true IP address, which flies in the face of one of the major protections provided by using a VPN. With a device's IP address, hackers could coordinate direct attacks against your smartphone including sending malware. While good VPNs do offer protection against this, Firefox allows users to control this themselves. Be warned, though, this is the only tip that isn't found in the Settings menu — it requires accessing the advanced settings. These advanced settings can cause the app to break if the wrong option is altered. However, I will break down the steps so that you don't need to worry. In the URL bar, type in about:config to enter the advanced settings. Next, type media.peerconnection.enabled into the search bar and an option of the same name should appear. Select this to change its value to "false," then close the tab to exit.

5. Clear Private Data on ExitEven after we close our browser, all our data is still stored and synced across the various platforms we use Firefox on. Firefox does provides the option to clear this data with one click, but it's easy to forget to do this each time. However, this isn't the only way to accomplish this. You can also automatically clear your data whenever you exit the app. You even have control what data is cleared each time. To accomplish this, head to the Settings menu and select "Privacy." Choose "Clear private data on exit" which will bring up a pop-up menu with various options. Choose the ones you wish to clear and select "Set" once you are finished. In order to use this feature, you'll need to exit out a little differently than normal. Tap the menu button in the top-right corner, then scroll down until you find the "Quit" option. You must use this option to automatically clear data. If you exit out the app by any other way, your data won't clear. With Firefox, there are plenty of settings to adjust to improve your security and reduce your risks while browsing the web. Of course, these steps won't eliminate all threats, but they do provide adequate protection for the average user. What do you think about Firefox's security features? How To: 5 Things You Didn't Know Your iPhone's Home Button Could Do

How To: 5 Things You Didn't Know Your iPhone's Home Button Could Do
The iPhone's home button is responsible for at least six different default functions—waking the lock screen, opening the multitasking interface, scanning Touch ID, summoning Siri, triggering Reachability, and going to the home screen. Objectively, that's a lot to ask of one single button.Don't Miss:How to Lock iPhone Notes with Touch ID or a PasswordWith all of this stuff going on, you'll sometimes encounter situations where you didn't mean to trigger a certain function. Other times, you'll double-click or triple-click, but the action you were trying to perform isn't registered. To help get things under control once and for all, or to get even more functionality out of your home button, check out the tips below. This guide assumes you're running the most up-to-date software, iOS 9, on your iPhone. These tips will also work the same in the new iOS 10, and some may work on older iOS versions, too.

1. Disable Reachability to Prevent Accidental TriggeringReachability was first introduced on the iPhone 6 variants to make the larger screens easier to use with only one hand, so if you don't have an iPhone 6 or 6s variant, you won't see Reachability anywhere. It's one of my favorite iOS features on my iPhone 6, but it's frustratingly easy to trigger by accident, because all it takes is two inadvertent touches. If you'd like to disable this feature, start by heading to the General menu in your iPhone's main Settings. From here, tap the Accessibility entry, then scroll down a bit and toggle the switch next to Reachability. From now on, double-tapping your home button won't cause anything to happen.

2. Decrease Click SpeedFor double- and triple-click functions, there's a certain speed that these gestures need to be performed with, otherwise the multitasking interface or your accessibility shortcut won't be launched. For some people, the default speed between clicks might be too fast.If you'd like to change this, head to the same Accessibility menu in Settings under General. From here, scroll down a bit, then select the Home Button option. Next, set the Click Speed to either Slow or Slowest, and from now on, you can take a little more time between button presses when launching double- and triple-click gestures.
3. Disable Siri to Prevent Accidental TriggeringIf you've ever felt your iPhone buzz while it was in your pocket, chances are, that was Siri being butt-activated by accident. All it takes is a long-press of the home button to get her going, but you can stop that from happening with the right setting.

How to Disable Siri Only on the Lock ScreenTo prevent accidental Siri activation, go to Touch ID & Passcode (or just Passcode) in your Settings menu, then input your passcode to continue. Once in, scroll down and toggle off Siri under Allow Access When Locked. (This will also disable Voice Dial controls.)

How to Disable Siri AltogetherDon't find Siri all that useful? You can disable her altogether—not just on the lock screen. Just note that this will NOT help you when accidentally long-pressing the home button in your pocket, because Siri's backup, Voice Control, will activate instead, and there's no way to disable Voice Control. If you still want to disable Siri altogether and use Voice Control instead, head to the General menu in Settings, then select the Siri option. (In iOS 10, Siri has its own menu in the Settings menu, so you don't have to go to General first.) From here, turn the feature off using the switch at the top of the screen, then press "Turn Off Siri" when prompted.
4. Assign a Triple-Click ActionUp until this point, I've only covered tips that involve removing or slowing down home button functionality for the sake of simplifying things. But you can actually add functionality to this button by assigning a triple-click gesture. Unlike Siri and Reachability, it's quite hard to trigger accidentally, so it's something you may want to consider.

How to Add Accessibility ShortcutsHead to the Accessibility menu in Settings again, then scroll down to the bottom and select Accessibility Shortcut. From here, select any of the available options, and from now on, that action will be triggered when you click your home button three times in rapid succession. This even works with multiple accessibility shortcuts enabled, in which case you'll be prompted to choose an action after triple-clicking. Don't Miss: Set Custom Home Button Gestures (Jailbreak Tweak)While most of the shortcuts available are pretty obvious, some can be tinkered with to do more than just what you'd think. For example, by tweaking a few settings for Zoom, you could effectively turn the Zoom shortcut into a toggle for display brightness, which in turn, will allow you to adjust screen brightness below the default setting.(For info on the AssistiveTouch shortcut, see tip 5 below.)

How to Enable the Guided Access ShortcutAdditionally, you can use the triple-click gesture to prevent your friends from snooping around in your iPhone when you want to show them a photo or text message real quick, or to keep your toddler from accidentally accessing certain functions. To try it out, select the Guided Access option towards the bottom of the Accessibility menu, then enable the feature using the switch at the top of the screen.Don't Miss: Show Someone a Photo Without Them Snooping Around To start Guided Access, just visit the app you want use it on, then triple-click the home button. If you have one or more Accessibility Shortcuts enabled from earlier, you'll have to select Guided Access from the pop-up menu; if not, it should start right away. You'll be asked to highlight an area of the screen that you don't want someone to be able to touch, or you can tap on Options to disable other things like Keyboards, or even Touch altogether. When ready, hit Start, then enter a password. At that point, you'll be able to hand your phone over to the other person without worries, because the only way for them to exit this app or interact with the restricted area would be to triple-click the home button (and tap on Guided Access, if other shortcuts are enabled), then enter the set password.

5. Get on-Screen Controls with AssistiveTouchIf you're still not happy with your iPhone's home button, or if it's currently broken or buggy, you may want to try an entirely new way to interact with your device. Instead of using a mechanical button to do everything, a feature called AssistiveTouch lets you control your iPhone with on-screen buttons. To enable this option, start by heading to the "AssistiveTouch" entry in your iPhone's Accessibility menu. Use the toggle up top to enable the feature, then a small, semi-transparent button will appear. Tap this button, and it will expand to show several more controls like Home, Siri, and Control Center. Even better, you can add or remove actions from this pop-up menu by using the "Customize Top Level Menu" option in the AssistiveTouch settings menu.Don't Miss: Use AssistiveTouch for Hands-Free Snapchat Videos

Bonus! Use Your Home Button to Boost Speed or RestartWhile we're on the subject of improving your iPhone experience through home button tweaks, there's a pair of related tips you should know about.First, a hack was recently uncovered that drastically speeds up performance on laggy iPhones using a special sequence of button presses. Just press the sleep/wake button until you see "slide to power off," then press and hold the home button, which will purge the RAM on your iPhone. Secondly, if you ever find yourself in a situation where your iPhone has become completely unresponsive, your home button can get you out of this jam. Instead of rebooting your device through the regular "power off" menu (which may not work in a freeze-up), simply hold down the sleep/wake and home buttons for at least 10 seconds—until you see the Apple logo appear—to force a reboot, which should hopefully solve your issue. In the end, these tips should go a long way towards improving your experience with your iPhone's home button, but if you're still not satisfied, some major changes could be on the way with the release of the iPhone 7 and iOS 10. The most pertinent news on this front is that the mechanical home button might finally be replaced with a capacitive, 3D Touch-enabled button, which is just one of the many rumors.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow Android Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+

How To: Sick of Your Cell Phone Provider? Go Prepaid with Ting and Skip the ETF for Breaking Your Contract

How To: Sick of Your Cell Phone Provider? Go Prepaid with Ting and Skip the ETF for Breaking Your Contract

Prepaid phones are becoming more and more popular, and tons of people can see the benefits of switching now that some companies are offering prepaid services that are on par with the big players. For a lot of folks, the only thing keeping them from switching is the huge early termination fees that service providers charge to break a contract early. If you've been thinking about switching, but don't want to fork over a few hundred bucks to get out of your contract, Ting has just the thing for you. For the month of February, the company has set aside $100,000 to help buy people out of their existing contracts. They're calling it the Ting $100,000 ETF Payout. Basically, if you leave your current phone company and switch to Ting, you get a credit for up to $350 towards your service in the amount that your ETF costs. All you have to do is port your number over, then send them a scan of your bill with the EFT on it. It may be a pain to pay the ETF up front, but wouldn't it be nice to not have a cell phone bill for a few months? Most carriers charge a few hundred bucks to cancel early, so if you have more than a month or two left on your contract, this promotion is well worth it.But, if you're really interested, you'll definitely want to act fast—it's first come first serve, so the $100,000 they've set aside means that if the average payout is $200, Ting will be able to buy out 500 contracts. You can check out their FAQs Page for more details on how it works.Want to find out if it would be worth it for you? This calculator will tell you how much your ETF would be, and Ting has a savings calculator so you can find out how the price of your current service compares to theirs. Ting's service runs off of Sprint's networks, and you can either bring your own device, or buy one of theirs. They don't have the Windows Phone or the iPhone, but they do have a great selection of Android phones including the Samsung Galaxy S3, Google Nexus, and Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

What if I Miss Out on the Deal?If you don't switch before February is over, or if the $100,000 promotion runs out first, there are a few ways you can reduce or get around your ETF if you still want to ditch your current provider.Call your carrier—If you complain about the service, or tell your phone company you're moving out of the coverage area, sometimes they'll waive your ETF. Tell them your phone drops calls constantly, or that you're moving to some remote area that you know they don't cover. You may have to get a little creative, but it's worth a shot. Always read the fine print—If your carrier changes the terms of your contract after you sign, you may be able to get out of paying the ETF. When you sign, you agree to the terms in the contract, so if they change, you have the right to walk away with no penalty. Take it to Twitter—or Facebook, or whatever public forum you think will work best. Companies have a history of responding in customers' favor when they make a big stink in a public place because they don't want others to see that you're unhappy with them. Just ask Dave Schneider—Delta broke his vintage guitar on a flight and only offered him 10% of its value, so he posted a photo on Facebook and gave an interview to Yahoo News, and suddenly Delta wanted to make things right. Gibson also contacted Dave to let him know they would replace his guitar for free, even though they did nothing wrong. Companies will do almost anything for good PR, so social media can be a powerful tool for this these situations. Transfer your contract—If someone else is willing to take over your contract, or switch carriers with you, that's a much easier option than cancelling. Find a friend or family member who's willing to swap, or try a site like CellTrade or TradeMyCellular where you can often find someone who's looking to switch. The sites charge a fee, but it should definitely be cheaper than paying the ETF. The bottom line is that if you want to leave your service provider and go prepaid, or just switch to a different carrier, there are plenty of ways to do it without paying a small fortune. If you're thinking about making the switch over to Ting, or know of any other tips for getting out of your ETF, be sure to let us know in the comments below.
