How To: Make the y-axis rails and nut for a CNC router

How To: Make the y-axis rails and nut for a CNC router

A CNC router machine is probably the most useful tool a hobbyist can own, but the price for a CNC machine on the market is way more than the average hobbyist is willing to spend. You can build your own CNC with very basic tools, little knowledge of machinery, mechanics, or electronics, but be warned, these machines are inherently dangerous, so wear the proper protection and use common sense. At the very least, read the instructions and precautions on every tool you use. Now, a CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, but that is gibberish. It does hint you to the fact that something is controlled, and probably by a computer. It's really a mechanism that interfaces to a computer to control its movements, similar to a robot, but this machine has a specific function. It cuts or shapes things with this control. In essence, a computer precisely controls a cutting tool, like a router for instance, to cut materials such as wood, plastic or metals into shapes only bounded by your imagination. This video tutorial will show you how to make the y-axis rails and transmission nut for a CNC router. Now you can cut the correct length for the rails. To cut the correct length, simply place an aluminum angle next to the gantry sides with one on the inside dimension of one side. Mark the other side a smidgen smaller than the length. You don't want the angle to bow and the y/z axis assembly will squeeze it together enough to press the angle into those beautiful chamfers. Do two of these, one for the top and one for the bottom of the y-axis rail support piece. Ok, now onto the transmission nut. You will have the challenge of doing some precise drilling here. Like with the z-axis lead screw, the y-axis screw is pretty much the same. All of the holes must align somewhat perfectly.

How To: Pimp Out Your Windows 10 Command Prompt

How To: Pimp Out Your Windows 10 Command Prompt
For those times when you can't get something done by clicking a few buttons with your mouse, the Windows command prompt has always been an indispensable tool. But as much as advanced users have relied on this useful utility, it hasn't seen a significant update since the Windows 95 days. That's finally changed with Windows 10, as Microsoft added some useful functionality like Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V copy and paste shortcuts. They've also added quite a few more customization options that allow you to personalize the command prompt to a look and feel that's uniquely yours, and I'll go over these options below.

Step 1: Open a Command Prompt WindowFirst things first, you'll of course need to launch the command prompt itself. If you haven't done this recently, I'll offer a brief refresher course—simply press the Windows button on your keyboard and wait until the Start menu opens, then type "cmd" and press Enter.Don't Miss: How to Use & Customize the New Start Menu

Step 2: Access the Settings MenuNext up, to tweak these options, you'll need to access the command prompt settings menu. To do that, simply click the logo in the upper-left corner of the window, then choose "Properties" from the context menu.

Step 3: Tweak Basic OptionsFrom here, you'll be taken to the main Options tab. Not much is worth changing in here, since most of the cool stuff like copy and paste functionality is already enabled. But if you'd like to be able to highlight command text with your mouse pointer, you can tick the box next to "QuickEdit Mode" at the very least.

Step 4: Adjust the Font, Layout, & ColorsNext, head over to the Font tab if you'd like to change the way text appears in your command prompt. There are a few fonts to choose from, and you can of course change their sizes, but one of the more interesting features here is an option to make fonts bold. Then, the Layout tab gives you options for adjusting the boundaries of the command prompt window itself. For instance, you can change the "Window Size" values to make the command prompt a bit bigger when it first launches, which should come in handy on today's larger monitors. Finally, the Colors tab is where you can make the biggest visual changes to the Windows 10 command prompt. First, choose one of the four options in the upper-left quadrant of this menu, then select a color from the provided options. If you'd like to go fully custom, you can even enter RGB values in the upper-right quadrant, or tweak opacity near the bottom of this menu. What does your command prompt look like now that you've got it all decked out and personalized? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

How To: Automatically Add Your Shazam Songs to a Rdio or Spotify Playlist

How To: Automatically Add Your Shazam Songs to a Rdio or Spotify Playlist
We recently showed you how to recover your Shazam history from Siri, which is a lot less intuitive than finding the songs you've tagged directly in the Shazam app. But with a subscription to Rdio or Spotify, there's no need to even locate your history. You can Shazam songs and have them automatically added to a newly created playlist titled "My Shazam Tracks."This works for both the Android and iOS app. However, keep in mind that if you're using an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, any songs that you manually add to your Shazam app from Siri will not be added to your Rdio or Spotify playlists. Also, if you subscribe to both Rdio and Spotify, you can only connect Shazam to one or the other, not both. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Connect to Your SubscriptionOn your mobile device, open the Shazam app and enter the Settings page ("Social Settings" on Android). Depending on your subscription, select either "Connect to Rdio" or "Connect to Spotify" and you'll be prompted to sign into your streaming music provider. Note that this will only work if you have a trial or paid subscription to Rdio or Spotify.

Step 2: Shazam SongsTo start adding songs, simply use Shazam as you typically would. After the application recognizes the song, it will be simultaneously added to your "My Shazam Tracks" playlist in Rdio or Spotify.Another benefit of connecting to Rdio or Spotify is that you can play the full track directly in Shazam after it's been recognized. You can also add the tracks to a different Rdio or Spotify playlist by tapping on the + icon in the top right of a tagged song. Again, iOS users, please keep in mind that this playlist will only populate with tracks identified through Shazam directly, not Siri, even if you add them to Shazam from Siri.

Step 3: Listen to Your PlaylistNow when you enter your Rdio or Spotify app, you'll see the a new playlist where all your Shazamed songs are stored, granted that they were available on the music service. Note that sometimes songs are not added to Spotify right away, and some people are experiencing blank playlists, which Spotify is aware of. With this useful feature, you'll be able to conveniently save songs that intrigued you for later-listening sessions. Let us know what you think in the comments below, or on our Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

News: Keep Your Web Browsing Secure with HTTPS Everywhere for Firefox

Web-spying technologies like FaceNiff, Firesheep and Newstweek are out there showing the world just how easy it is to see what you're doing online, but they're amateurish in comparison to what real hackers could do to you if they catch you browsing unsecured websites.Luckily, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Tor Project have just launched an official 1.0 version of their HTTPS Everywhere extension for the Firefox web browser, which forces encrypted connections to more than 1,000 websites that support the option.HTTPS encryption makes sure that your online activities are protected from eavesdropping, and helps keep your accounts from getting hijacked by encrypting both requests from your browser to websites and the resulting displayed webpages. But a lot of times, you don't even know you have the option to browse securely, or it's confusing and difficult to use. HTTPS Everywhere helps you out by automatically encrypting the connections, making it easier to keep your user names, passwords and browsing histories secure and private."HTTPS Everywhere 1.0 encrypts connections to Google Image Search, Flickr, Netflix, Apple, and news sites like NPR and the Economist, as well as dozens of banks. HTTPS Everywhere also includes support for Google Search, Facebook, Twitter, Hotmail, Wikipedia, the New York Times, and hundreds of other popular websites."Right now, HTTPS Everywhere is only available for Firefox, but they are interested in developing it for other browsers like Chrome, once the option arises. Until then, Chrome users can use KB SSL Enforcer to protect their web browsing, though it's not as reliable as HTTPS Everywhere would be.You can download HTTPS Everywhere for Firefox here.

Android Basics: How to Find Your Phone's Screen Density Value

Breaking: Google Releases 'Android N' Preview Build with Lots of Major Changes

Breaking: Google Releases 'Android N' Preview Build with Lots of Major Changes
We knew it was coming eventually, but this is a bit out of left field—early builds of the next version of Android have been released almost two months ahead of schedule. Android N, as it's being called for now, is already available for the last two generations of Nexus devices, though it's just an early preview build for now. There are some sweeping changes in this new Android version, including multi-window mode (versus the half-baked version in Marshmallow) and a redesigned notification system that allows for quick replies. Coupled with a newly-announced "Android Beta" program, and this release makes for a lot of newsworthy stuff—so let's get down to it, shall we?

Multi-Window ModeSimilar to Samsung's implementation, you can now trigger multi-window mode in Android N through the recent apps menu. Instead of using a button, though, you simply drag any recent app by its title bar, then drop it on the top portion of your screen to trigger multi-window mode. From here, a black bar will be visible at the bottom of the first window, which you can then use to resize the top app as you see fit. To open the second window, just choose from one of the remaining recent apps. This will appear in the bottom portion of the screen, and of course you can resize the two windows using the drag handle. To exit multi-window mode, simply drag the black drag handle all the way to the top (of left if in landscape mode).

Revamped Notifications & Quick SettingsBeyond that, the new notification system is more than just a visual overhaul. True, there's a new look, and notifications are no longer separated with empty space—but a new API will also allow app developers to group notifications together and post actionable notification buttons (as seen with the Play Store's "Update All" button, and the download manager's "Cancel" button below). These actionable buttons can even include "Quick Reply" functionality, similar to iOS's version. An update to Hangouts just recently added this feature, which allows you to tap a button on the notification, then immediately respond to the message without having to enter the Hangouts app. As you probably noticed in the screenshots above, Android's Quick Settings menu is changing as well. When the notification tray is expanded, you'll get quicker access to a handful of common toggles at the top of the screen—but you can still expand the Quick Settings panel to see more options. On top of that, a new "Edit" button in the expanded Quick Settings panel lets you easily arrange and adjust the toggles.

New Settings MenuAndroid's main Settings menu is getting revamped, as well. For starters, a new "Suggestions" feature pins any relevant options to the top of the menu—for instance, if you haven't set up a screen lock yet, you'll see this option above all others. Then, perhaps a bigger change is visible when you enter any Settings submenu—a new side navigation menu lets you quickly jump to other submenus for easier navigation.
Android Beta ProgramOne of the most interesting parts of this preview release is the way it will be delivered to consumers. According to the Android N download page, users will be able to sign up for an "Android Beta" program, which will deliver early versions such as this one in the form of an OTA update. So far, the Android Beta website hasn't gone live—but in the near future, it should allow users with eligible devices to sign up for the program and receive early preview builds automatically.
How to Try Android N Right NowWhile the new Android Beta program may take a little while to get up and running, that doesn't mean you can't already try out Android N. If you're adventurous enough, Google has already posted the factory images, so just head to this link to grab the package for your Nexus device. On our test device, it's been smooth sailing for far, but of course, your mileage may vary.Once you've got the factory images package saved to your computer, you can simply sideload the update using fastboot. I've covered this process in detail before, so for a full set of instructions, check out this guide for Windows, or this guide for Mac and Linux.Follow Android Hacks on Facebook or Twitter, or Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter for more breaking Android news.
