How To: Get the Galaxy S5's New Recent Apps Menu & Toggles on Your Galaxy S3 (KitKat)

Transparent status bars and new lock screens weren't the only new additions that came with the Galaxy S3 KitKat update. Along with better battery life and a smoother user experience, we got a new toggles design and recent apps menu. Of course, Samsung's infinite wisdom left these two aesthetic features hidden away. Luckily, with root, you can easily enable them with just a few quick edits.
Your Device Needs to Have Android 4.4.2 KitKatNow, first things first, I know a lot of you don't have official KitKat. Because this mod will only work with the stock TouchWiz version of Android 4.4.2, at the current time it will only work with the Sprint variant.That being said, S3 owners on AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless should expect to see their updates sometime in the next few weeks to months, but there are no official timetables.Unfortunately, international S3 owners will be left out, at least until a workable port is becomes usable. Because the international models shipped with 1GB of RAM (versus the 2GB on U.S. variants), Samsung has officially ruled out a KitKat update for those devices.Of course, if you don't feel like waiting for your update, you can always use an Xposed module and some tweaked settings to achieve the same look for the toggles, as Mike showed you here.

Step 1: Root Your DeviceWhile traditional methods will work, if you are on the latest ND8 build and are not rooted, all you need to do is flash Chainfire's SuperSU through Odin.Simply download the .zip and extract the .tar file. Place that file in the PDA slot in Odin, make sure that USB debugging is enabled, and flash away. Once the flash is completed and your device has rebooted, head to Google Play and update the SuperSU app.

Step 2: Edit Your Build.prop FileThanks to developer Hawkish, enabling these hidden theming elements is as easy as editing your build.prop file. Similar to the Samsung Milk Music hack, we simply need to change our device properties.I'll be using Root Explorer, but you can use any other root-capable file explorer for this. Step 2: Boot into Custom RecoveryThe process of booting into custom recovery varies depending on your device model. If you're using an AT&T or Verizon variant of the Galaxy S5, start by rebooting your phone. After the Samsung Galaxy S5 logo appears, tap the Recovery button in the lower left-hand corner to boot into Safestrap. For all other models, begin by turning your phone completely off. Next, press and hold the Power, Home and Volume Down buttons simultaneously, and your recovery should come right up.

Step 3: Install the S5 Volume Boost ZIPBefore you flash anything in a custom recovery, you should always be sure to have a backup of your existing setup. For Safestrap or TWRP, swipe the slider at the bottom of the screen to apply the mod. With Philz Touch or ClockworkMod, select Yes to install it. When the process has finished, hit Reboot System. Reverting to Stock Volume LevelsIf you decide that you'd like to revert to the stock volume levels at some point in the future, the process is just as easy.Simply download the revert ZIP file from this link, then use the same process outlined above to flash it. Outgoing data requests sent from devices on these service providers are being injected with a Unique Identifier Header (UIDH) that allows websites, the carriers, and potentially even government agencies to track your online activity.By appending what amounts to an online fingerprint to your outgoing data requests, carriersâ€”and I quoteâ€”"may provide services, applications, and/or content that are targeted to the subscribers". At the same time, websites that you connect to receive this UIDH, enabling them to associate your user account with a particular device. All of this leaves quite a distinct trail that any government agency with a subpoena could easily follow.But developer Vanalot has an app that will at least allow you to find out if you're being tracked. Armed with this info, you can determine the best course of action, and I'll provide a couple of links below that may be helpful in opting out. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

For some reason, the Slack app on Android and iOS is a little less customizable than Slack on other platforms, so you can't adjust the sidebar theme to different colors directly inside the app. But that doesn't mean you can't customize the look of your mobile app at all. It's just a little less convenient.The mobile app, desktop app, mobile browser version, and desktop browser version of Slack are all interconnected. So while some things can be tweaked specifically for each version, such a whether or not you can receive notifications, other things, like the sidebar color scheme will be the same across all versions.You can probably see where I'm going with this. Since there are no settings in the Slack app for iPhone or Android phones to adjust the sidebar theme, you're going to have to customize them elsewhere, and those customizations will apply to the mobile apps as well as where you choose to adjust them.I'm going to show off how to do this from a mobile "desktop" website (the regular mobile site won't work), but the process will be the same whether you're doing it in a real desktop browser, macOS app, Windows app, or Linux app.

In the mobile app, hovering would be long-pressing but not actually tapping it. Text Color: This is the color of the font that appears everywhere in the sidebar, overtop the column background. Active Presence: This is the color of the dots that appear indicating when another user is online. Mention Badge: This is the color of the badge on the right that shows up when someone @ mentions you in a channel, thread, or direct message. The number on the badge will always be white, from what I can tell. Below, which shows the mobile app, not the site in the browser, you can see I was playing with the background column color and the main text color. If you design a cool sidebar theme and want to share it with others, you can copy all the hex color codes in the box underneath the individual color selectors, then paste it wherever (example: a direct message on Slack).
