My friend and I finally got around to building these (try finding water guns in stores in December), and found out that the candles didn't work well at all. So, we used some fire starter sticks, and those seemed to work really well. As you're only supposed to fill up tanks in a water gun about 2/3 to 3/4 anyway, we pumped them up a lot.

How To: Make an AC Arc Welder Using Parts from an Old Microwave, Part 1

How To: Make an AC Arc Welder Using Parts from an Old Microwave, Part 1

In a previous article, I demonstrated an Arc Welder made using parts from old microwave ovens. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Here is part 1 of 2 on how that arc welding machine was made, and how you could make one too! This is the first of two parts on building it, focusing on the modification of the transformers. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
WARNING: Stick welding, and/or the modification of a Microwave Oven Transformer (M.O.T), can be very dangerous and presents risks of UV radiation, shock hazards, burns, fires, fumes and a multitude of other risks. This project should not be attempted without a thorough understanding of electricity, adult supervision and adequate training. Misuse, or careless use, of tools or projects may result in serious injury and/or death. Use of this content is at your own risk. In a previous project, I melted the lead wires on my first metal melter. But the transformer core was still in great condition, so I re-used it to make an AC stick welder! The arc welder made sparks fly, but in the end, it wasn't enough power to make the metal stick, and the pieces of work would break apart with very little effort. If I tried pumping more power into the welder, the wires would overheat and melt.So to address this challenge, we'll be using 2 MOTs (Microwave Oven Transformers), because more transformers means more power! Preparing the MOTs for a new secondary is exactly the same as the first few steps we took in the Metal Melter project. As it's a little redundant, I won't spend much time on the step-by-step instructions for that, but if you haven't seen it yet, you can check out the video, or reference my previous article. To make life a lot easier, you're going to need to build a little jig for winding your secondary. It's unlikely you'll get all the required turns of wire in such a tight space without one.To make this jig, I used a piece of scrap wood and cut it so that it was as wide as the center of the transformer, and just a little shorter than the top. The length was cut so that it overhung about 1/2" from the ends.I screwed wood panels on the top and bottom to guide the wires and keep them in place, then folded a piece of paper so that it fit in the groove.Once mounted in a bench vice for leverage, the cable can be wound on.For this project, try to round up around 50'of 8 AWG stranded copper cable from a local hardware store. You could probably save some money by scavenging for free wire, but I decided to look at the "end of coil" section at the hardware store, and was able to negotiate a deal for half price on the cable, so the 50' only cost me about $17.These modified MOTs will need a new secondary that is 18 turns of the 8 AWG cable, and both MOTs will be tied together in series. I also found I needed to run the system on 240 volts AC to get the power output for good welding. My goal was 30+ volts AC with a variable amperage from 0-120+ Amps.In practical terms, this means you need to wind the coil on the form so that you end up with 6 cable lengths high, and 3 cable lengths wide. Oh yeah, and it all needs to be able to fit back in the transformer, so wind it tight! The first layer isn't too bad, but winding the second layer, and third get progressively more difficult, and may seem near impossible.Once you get the 18 turns of wire to fit in the groove, you can fold the paper over, and tape it together to help the coil hold together. Here's the tricky part .. get it off the jig without letting it unravel! The top and bottom panels can be removed, and the block pushed out from the center of the coil. I used electrical tape to make sure the coils stayed tight. Putting the secondary coil in the transformer is a very tight fit.I had the best success by using a set of clamps to squeeze the sides of the coil in, while I used a rubber hammer to gently tap the coil down. When it's in, the coil had better fit below the top edge of the transformer, otherwise you won't be able to get the top back on.Securing the top on is the same as in the Metal Melter project as well. Basically, use 2 part epoxy glue to cover the entire top surface, then replace the iron lid and press it together tightly in clamps or a large vice. It's extremely important to have a lot of pressure on the joint while the epoxy is setting. I let mine set for about 24 hours. The modified transformer is complete! The secondary coil is so tight in there, that any vibrations from the 60Hz mains power will be kept to a minimum. When both transformers are modified in the exact same way, we've basically got what we need for welding. All that's left is to clean it up a bit and make it more useful and presentable. By the way, these two exposed wires from the secondaries will become our ground clip and stinger.Well, there they are! The basic makings of an AC stick welder. From this point, it isn't difficult to finish the system up into a nice little hobby welder. Watch how to do that in Part 2. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
If you haven't see the video yet, it's not too late. Watch it here!If you like this project perhaps you'll like some of my others. Check them out at thekingofrandom.com.

News: Here's When Your Galaxy Will Get Samsung's New One UI Update

News: Here's When Your Galaxy Will Get Samsung's New One UI Update
Who doesn't love a refresh? Samsung's upcoming One UI makes it easier to use your device with one hand and adds a fresh coat of paint to the formally "Samsung Experience" skin. While you're probably looking forward to installing One UI on your phone, not all Galaxies are equal — your device could be one of the first to receive the update, or it could never see One UI at all.To be clear, One UI is not yet available on any Galaxy device, at least officially. Samsung devices are notoriously slow to receive Android updates, so even the most recent of Galaxy phones are still running Oreo as opposed to the Android Pie update that drives One UI. Of course, if you're growing impatient, you can always download the Android 9 beta. The open beta isn't quite here yet, so you'll need to put in a little extra elbow grease to get your S9 or S9+ running Pie.Don't Miss: How to Get Android Pie Beta on Your Galaxy S9 or S9+ Right Now
Galaxy Note 9Those who purchased Samsung's latest and greatest — at least as of the time of this article — will be first in line to receive the update. One UI is coming to unlocked Galaxy Note 9 devices in January, with carrier variants — Verizon, T-Mobile, etc. — to follow closely behind.Carrier variants issue their own updates, rather than letting Samsung take the reigns. Unlocked devices are not at the mercy of any particular carrier, so they will typically be first to update.
Galaxy S9/S9+If you opted for the Galaxy S9 or S9+ over the Note 9, don't worry — these devices will receive the update at the exact same time as the Note 9. Unlocked devices will get the update in January, with carrier variants following that.It pays to be in the most up-to-date device cycle, even if the Note 9 is newer than the S9 devices.
Galaxy Note 8Galaxy Note 8 owners are not as fortunate as 2018 flagship users. While the Note 8 is only from 2017, Samsung has no official One UI release date for last year's phablet. That being said, connected Samsung leaker Ice Universe received confirmation from a Samsung executive that the Note 8 would also be receiving the One UI/Android Pie update. There's no word on a timetable, but based on Samsung's track record with updates, its possible Note 8 owners will see One UI hit their device in Q2 2019.
Galaxy S8 & S8+The story is the same for the Galaxy S8 and S8+. Ice Universe also confirmed that these devices would be getting One UI, as per a Samsung executive. Again, though, there's no timetable. So just as with the Note 8, however, expect the update to follow soon after the 2018 line of Galaxy devices, possibly Q2 2019.
Other Galaxy PhonesContrary to popular belief, you don't need to upgrade a phone every one or two years, as older phones today work well into old age. The caveat, however, is that OEMs like Samsung stop updating phones after a couple years. That's why we don't expect the following Galaxy phones to get One UI, although we're open to the possibility that they will:Galaxy S7 Galaxy S7 Edge Galaxy S7 Active Galaxy Note 7 (no longer supported) Galaxy S6 Galaxy S6 Edge Galaxy S6 Edge+ Galaxy S6 Active Galaxy Note 6 As for midrange phones that have released in the past two or three years, we're sorry to say you'll likely never see One UI. The cost margins are so thin on these devices that Samsung can't justify keeping a team of software developers around to update their firmware.Galaxy A9 Galaxy A9 Pro Galaxy A6 Galaxy J3 Galaxy J7 As we learn more specifics, particularly with the 2017 flagship models, we'll update this guide with ETAs and specific launch dates, so keep checking back!Don't Miss: 44 Cool New Features & Changes in Android 9.0 PieFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

News: Sony Xperia XZ2 & XZ2 Compact Specs, Features & Highlights

News: Sony Xperia XZ2 & XZ2 Compact Specs, Features & Highlights
The Sony Xperia XZ Premium brought 4K HDR to a Sony flagship along with some competitive internals, while the Xz1 brought some powerful specs in a more midrange, traditional form factor. Now, Sony has unveiled the XZ2, which sees not only an upgrade in performance, but a complete design overhaul as well. While Sony has certainly lagged behind in the US market, the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are pure 2018. From the large 4K display and smaller bezels to the new Snapdragon 845 chip, Sony is stepping it up this year. It's not clear whether the XZ2 is what it'll take for Sony to break through the juggernaut of US smartphones, but from our view, it's a worthy effort.Don't Miss: 5 Snapdragon 845 Features That Are Better Than the 835
Global Release: March 2018The XZ2 devices were only revealed on Sunday, but they should be here within the month. While no definitive dates have surfaced, Sony claims the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact will be available this coming March.

4K HDR Display, Smaller BezelsThe XZ2 might not be a "bezel-less" phone like we've come to expect nowadays, but it certainly has trimmed away most of the fat. The XZ2 looks great with its 4K HDR 5.7" display, even with a more pronounced top and bottom chin than, say, the Galaxy S9 (but certainly not the iPhone 8). Image via Sony The XZ2 Compact, on the other hand, has a smaller 5" display. However, it's still that crispy 4K HDR resolution you'd find on the XZ2, so you won't be sacrificing quality if you choose the smaller device.

4 Colors EachThe XZ2 and XZ2 Compact come in four unique colors each. Due to the XZ2's metallic makeup, its colors are deeper than the Compact's. However, each has a black, silver, green, and pink option. The XZ2 comes in Liquid Black, Liquid Silver, Deep Green, and Ash Pink, while the Compact comes in Black, White, Moss Green, and Coral Pink. (1) Deep Green. (2) Moss Green. Images via Sony (1, 2)
Key Specs: Snapdragon 845, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB StorageThe XZ2 is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to pure power. Sony installed the latest Snapdragon 845 SoC in both the XZ2 and the XZ2 Compact, along with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. You also have up to 400 GB of expandable storage to work with, if that 64 GB doesn't cut it.Sure, we'd like to see a higher internal storage option. But 4 GB of RAM is good news, even if other Android devices have managed to fit up to twice that amount of memory. While slightly slower than the S9's Snapdragon 845, the XZ2 screams with speeds of 2.7 GHz. For comparison, the OnePlus 5T's Snapdragon 835 was clocked at 2.45 GHz. There's no doubt here — Sony's latest device is fast.

19 MP Rear Camera, 960 FPS 1080p Slo-MoThe XZ2 has a great camera on paper, and it should — Sony is a well-known lens maker, so you'd expect its smartphones to come equipped with some decent camera tech. Image via Sony The XZ2 comes standard with a 19 MP rear camera, which is capable of shooting 4K HDR video, HDR photos, and, notably, 960 FPS slo-mo at 1080p. Samsung boasted about its 960 FPS feature in the new S9, but they cap their resolution at 720p. We won't know for sure until we get our hands on the camera, but it looks like the XZ2 might be one to consider for any photographer out there.Don't Miss: Everything You Need to Know About the Galaxy S9's CameraThe front camera, however, isn't anything to write home about. It's only 5 MP, which isn't bad. Megapixels aren't everything, of course, but the S9 and iPhone X both have Sony beat in this field. Selfies are important in 2018 — will 5 MP cut it?If you like your phones on the small side, don't worry about losing any features by picking up an XZ2 Compact — both phones have exactly the same cameras, so you won't be missing a thing with Sony's smaller offering.
Battery & Quick ChargingA smartphone really is only as good as its battery. The XZ2's, from our view, can go either way. The 3,180 mAh battery found in the larger device certainly isn't huge, like the 4,000 mAh of the Razer Phone. However, Sony is pushing "Smart Stamina," which will warn you if it feels you're using too much power to turn on, essentially, a low-power mode. Sony thinks Smart Stamina will keep your phone running all day, but we'll see.Let's hope the same rings true for the XZ2 Compact, whose battery is only 2,870 mAh. While the Compact has 0.7" less display to power than the XZ2, it still has to contend with the same powerful Snapdragon 845 chip. Be warned — you might not be buying the XZ2 Compact for its battery life. One spot of good news is that both XZ2 devices ship with Quick Charge 3.0. Even if the XZ2's battery life stinks, you'll be able to charge it back up in a jiffy.Unfortunately, only the XZ2 features wireless charging, as the Compact is made of plastic. If wireless charging is a must for you, go for the regular XZ2. Plus, it comes with a free charging stand!Don't Miss: A New Age in Wireless Charging Is Here — & It's Not Just Qi

Dynamic VibrationSony has implemented a new type of feedback into the XZ2 called "Dynamic Vibration." The vibration in the XZ2 works with the content you are viewing or interacting with to give you more realistic and appropriate vibration based on what's happening on-screen. You can choose from different intensities at any point, as well as turn off the feature entirely. Image by The Verge/YouTube The XZ2 Compact does not have this feature, so those looking for upgrades to a traditional smartphone vibration will want to stick to the larger XZ2.
Dual Speakers, RIP Headphone JackThe XZ2 comes with two stereo speakers, which we more than welcome. Your games, videos, music and more will be both louder and more immersive thanks to the speakers on the front and bottom of the chassis.Like we said, the Sony XZ2 is a 2018 smartphone — sadly, that means no headphone jack. While it's a decision that more and more OEMs are making, it still hurts to see new phones without that port. Some of us still have wired headphones, Sony.Don't Miss: What Every Major Phone Gained By Removing the Headphone JackFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Play Old Sega Genesis, Sega CD, & Sega Master System Games on Your Samsung Galaxy S3

How To: Play Old Sega Genesis, Sega CD, & Sega Master System Games on Your Samsung Galaxy S3
The world of Android gaming is much bigger than what's available in the Google Play Store. If you have a Samsung Galaxy S3 or other Android device—don't just stop there—a hidden treasure of games lies in those boxes of old, dusty game cartridges in your closet. You're already probably playing your old Super Nintendo games on your GS3, but now it's time get nostalgic with good ol' Sega! Just a few steps and you'll be Sega-gaming in no time. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Download Sega EmulatorAs we've covered before, emulators are the core system that games, or ROMs, run on. The problem is, there are a ton of emulators out there, and most of them come at a steep price, usually around $4 or $5!RetroArch takes a different approach. It's free and open source for a start, but it's also multi-platform, meaning that it is capable of emulating multiple systems. Some of the integrated emulators function better than others, and some take a little work to get running, but I think the Sega Genesis one works really well.Once you've downloaded the app, launch it and scroll down until you see Genesis Plus GX. This is our Sega emulator and it's capable of running Genesis, Sega CD, and Sega Master System games.
Step 2: Place Games on Your DeviceYou can try buying conversion software and hardware, but that's a fairly complicated process. Instead, just do a search online for the ROM files of the games you own. Remember, if you don't own them, you're walking a fine line in terms of legality.Keep in mind, just like Super Nintendo game files, ROMs for Genesis systems will come as .zip files. Just do a quick Google search for "Sega game ROMs" to find some sites that have games ready to download.Once you've got a few games, move them over to your phone. For easy access, stick them all in the same folder.

Step 3: Set Up and Play Sega Games with RetroArchYou've got the system, you've got the games, now let's set up and play!Select Genesis Plus GX and browse to the folder your game files are located, then simply select the file. You're game will start, but before we get going, we need to change the keypad, or input, to the Sega controller. Just hit the small RetroArch symbol in the lower middle of the screen. Now, using the keypad, scroll down to "Input Options" (use A for select and "B" for back). Image via wonderhowto.com Now select "Overlay Preset" and scroll down to "genesis3-landscape.cfg" (or choose the portrait option if that's how you want to play). Once you've done that, use "B" again to back out to the main menu, and scroll down to "Resume Game". That's it! Enjoy your flashback to the '90s.If for some reason you don't like RetroArch, Danny from Nexus 7 softModder has a really good guide for running another free emulator called GENPlusDroid. The only difference really is the controls are a little different and it's made specifically for Sega Genesis. It should work just fine on your Galaxy S3, but I really did RetroArch for Sega gaming.Which emulator do you prefer for Sega games?

News: 100+ Apps iOS Users Need on Their iPhones in 2018
While there aren't as many ways to customize your iPhone like there is on Android, there are still a lot of apps out there that can help streamline and enhance your experience beyond Apple's own default options — and we've hand-picked over 100 essentials. No matter if you've been using an iPhone for years or just picked up an iPhone X, these are the third-party apps you should have right now on iOS 11. Of course, you should only install ones that fit your daily workflow and style, but we've included everything from automation tools to hot games and replacements for Mail, Camera, Safari, and more, so there's something for everyone here.Don't Miss: 100+ Apps Android Users Need on Their Phones in 2018
Automation Apps (2)While there is no real iOS alternative to MacroDroid or Tasker for Android, there are few automation tools you should definitely be using on your iPhone to automate tasks between services you use on a daily basis.IFTTT: Create actions between different services and over 500 different apps. Workflow: Personal automation tool with over 200 actions (bought by Apple).
Third-Party Keyboards (5)Apple's stock keyboard is fairly good, especially with QuickType embedded, but it's not perfect by any means — especially with all of the autocorrect bugs that have been happening. Plus, you still can't swipe to type, a huge disadvantage to some of the ones below. Once you install one, make sure to enable it in your settings.Fleksy: Has swipe gestures and lots of extensions and free themes. Gboard: My favorite keyboard with swipe typing, GIFs, and Google search. GO Keyboard: Swipe typing, re-sizeable keyboard, themes, and stickers. Grammarly: Amazing keyboard when you're worried about looking like an idiot. SwiftKey: Swipe typing, personal predictions, accurate, bilingual, and themes.
Mail Alternatives (5)One of the worst things about Apple's default Mail app is that you can't bulk delete, so it's hard to keep a tidy inbox. Some of the email clients below let you do just that, and there are even a few unique features like scheduling emails, themes, and snoozing emails to make Mail look outdated.Email - Edison Mail: Fast, unsubscribe option, smart notifications, and more. Inbox by Gmail: Great for those who only use Gmail or Google Apps accounts. Microsoft Outlook: Smart inbox, scheduled emails, and reliable. myMail: Supports all email accounts with a friendly interface. Spark: Smart inbox, more swipes customization, scheduled emails, and themes.
Safari Alternatives (5)Yes, all of the third-party web browsers for iOS are required to use Apple's WebKit, so they end up being like wrappers for Safari, but that doesn't mean they aren't better depending on how you browse. You may want to pick a browser that you also use on your computer to sync data or one that is more privacy-focused.Aloha Browser: Has privacy/security in mind with free VPN service. Firefox: Sync between Firefox on desktop, has modern design, "no image" mode. Google Chrome: Great if you use Chrome on desktop, to sync between devices. Microsoft Edge: Windows users only, can pick up where you left off on your PC. Onion Browser: Tor-powered, continually updated, great for visiting .onion sites.
Content Blockers (4)iOS 9 added support for content blockers in Safari, which means you can install one of these apps, activate it, then never see another ad while browsing the web. Alternatively, some ad blockers use Apple's VPN system to block ads in every app on your phone, but these can add extra battery drain.Crystal Adblock: Block ads in Safari with our favorite content blocker. AdGuard: Blocks ads system-wide, but uses a VPN to do so. Firefox Focus: A private browser that also offers a content blocker for Safari. 1Blocker: Content blocker for Safari that even works for the most annoying ads.
Apple Maps Alternatives (3)Apple Maps has gotten only better over the years, especially with its indoor maps for malls and airports, but it still has a lot of catching up to do compared to other navigation apps. When I lived in Los Angeles, it hardly ever failed me, but after moving to the Midwest, it has a hard time keeping up with me en route and doesn't always tell me the right thing to do, which has led me to some of the below apps for driving directions.Google Maps: Collected more data, so more detailed maps and accuracy. HERE WeGo: A solid alternative with smart planning before a trip and more. Waze: Great for finding shortcuts around deadlocked rush hour traffic.
More Travel Apps (3)Traveling isn't just about looking at a map — sometimes, you'll need to catch a ride, see the cheapest gas prices, or just find something cool to do while you're out on your journey.GasBuddy: Always find (and report) the cheapest gas around. Lyft: Ride sharing made easy — just press a button and get a ride. Uber: The most popular ride sharing service is available in most cities.
Photos Alternatives (3)Whether you're worried about iCloud getting hacked or you just want a different layout when viewing and managing your photos, these gallery apps are the best of the best.Google Photos: High-quality cloud backup for free with Google's AI behind it all. Flickr: A full terabyte of free cloud storage, plus a nice UI. Prime Photos: Amazon's Google Photos clone is getting pretty good these days.
Other Photo Apps (2)That last set of apps was all about replacing the primary functionality in Apple's Photos app: Organizing your photo library. These next app, on the other hand, are great for actually editing your pictures.Motion Stills: Turn your Live Photos into sharable GIFs and more. Snapseed: Simple UI with plenty of unique features.
Camera Alternatives (4)Apple's stock Camera app is a pretty great app for general iPhone users, even with the new Portrait Lighting modes baked in for newer iPhone models. However, if you want more control over your photos, you'll want to go with a third-party option, even if it costs a few bucks.Halide ($2.99): Pro RAW photo-taking tools for killer control over your pics. Microsoft Pix: All of the features from Apple's Camera app and then some. VSCO: Powerful camera app with a strong social community behind it. Camera+ ($2.99): Several great "Scene" modes and a "Clarity" feature that will have your pictures looking crisp.
Weather Alternatives (3)Apple's Weather app is quite nice, but if you want more information, more accurate forecasts, or even just a weather radar, you'll get plenty of use out of any of these alternatives.Dark Sky ($3.99): Hyper-local weather, down to the nearest weather station. Weather Underground: Personalized interface with lots of data to browse. Yahoo Weather: Very similar to Apple's Weather app, but with backgrounds pulled from Flickr.
iCloud Drive Alternatives (5)Now that iOS 11 has a Files app that consolidates cloud storage services (to some degree), it's a good idea to max out your amount of free storage available, even if that means using different services. iCloud Drive only gives you 5 GB of free storage, which could be toast fairly quickly with backups and emails. So try using the following cloud services in combination with iCloud Drive, all of which can be accessed in the Files app.Adobe Creative Cloud: 2 GB free, with more free based on your subscription. Box: 10 GB free, but restricts files to 250 MB max size each. Dropbox: 2 GB free, but you can get up to 20 GB more free completing actions. Google Drive: 15 GB free per account, shared with Gmail and Google Photos. Microsoft OneDrive: 5 GB free, $2/month for 50 GB, or more than 1 TB with Office 365 subscription.
Messages Alternatives (3)iMessages are awesome, but everyone has at least one friend who runs Android, which means you have to deal with plain old SMS when talking to them. These apps offer similar functionality to Apple's default messenger, but they work on all mobile devices.Messenger: Facebook's app is feature-rich and lets you contact all your friends. Telegram: One of the fastest-growing messengers with a focus on privacy. WhatsApp: The world's biggest messenger — chances are, your friends are already using it.
Security Necessities (3)Smartphones are among the worst things to ever happen to personal privacy — they're digital windows into every aspect of our lives. If you're not a fan of Big Brother looking over your shoulder, you can still reclaim a bit of privacy and security by using the following apps.LastPass: Must-have for strong passwords with easy access at your fingertips. ProtonMail: When you need encrypted emails, this is how you do it. Signal: A secure messaging app when you need to protect your privacy.
Social Apps (6)The internet is a beautiful thing. It has taught us so much about humankind and has now become the driving force behind many of the latest trends. At the heart of it all are these social media apps, where the internet happens.Facebook: The social network. Learn the basics here. Instagram: Facebook's photo-oriented social media service. Learn more. LinkedIn: A social media service for employers and employees. Reddit Official: The best way to read The Front Page of the Internet on iOS. Snapchat: The "in" social network with lots of cool features. Twitter: The official Twitter client will help you keep your finger on the internet's pulse.
Apple Music Alternatives (5)Apple Music is the only streaming music service that you can purchase directly from your iPhone, but if you sign up for one of these services from your computer, you may find that they're a better fit for you.Google Play Music: Very similar to Apple Music, but comes with YouTube Red. Pandora Music: One of the first streaming services and still one of the best. Spotify Music: The #1 music streaming service by subscriber count. YouTube Music: A music-focused version of YouTube — watch or just listen. Amazon Music: Stream free music with your Prime account, pay to get more, or upload your own.
Other Music Apps (2)Music isn't just about listening — there's an entire culture behind it. These next apps will help you find the name of any song that's playing and even catch your favorite band's next show.Bandsintown Concerts: Scans your music and tells you when bands play. Shazam: Music recognition service that Apple just purchased.
Movie, TV & Video Apps (8)You just can't beat Apple's Retina displays — aside from its smaller stature, the screen on your iPhone is likely the nicest display you own. So put down your laptop, turn off your TV, and start consuming some content on that gorgeous mobile display with these great streaming apps.HBO NOW: Watch Game of Thrones without a cable subscription. Hulu: Disney owns a majority stake in Hulu now, but the service is still great. Netflix: One of those apps everyone should have on their phone. YouTube: The single-biggest video sharing site just keeps getting better. YouTube TV: Google's new streaming cable app has a slick UI. Sling TV: Dish Network's app that kicked off the streaming cable craze. PlayStation Vue: The app isn't the greatest, but the service itself is top-notch. Amazon Prime Video: If you have Amazon Prime, you're throwing away money if you don't have this app.
Tools (4)A modern smartphone is like a digital Swiss Army knife — there's virtually nothing it can't do. This next set of apps will help you leverage that power by making sure your device is running as it should while even branching out into real-world handyman territory.Geekbench 4 ($0.99): Make sure your iPhone is performing like it should. Speedtest: Suspect slow Wi-Fi speeds? This will confirm or deny it. Watts Up?: Converts cooking instructions to your specific microwave. Measure: Get super-precise measurements through your phone's camera thanks to Apple's new Augmented Reality API, ARKit.
Finance (2)Whether it's cryptocurrency like Bitcoin or just plain-old hard-earned cash, these next apps will go a long way towards getting your finances in order.Coinbase: The single-best wallet app for all your cryptocurrency needs. Mint: Link your accounts, then Mint will help get your finances in order.
Free Games (5)We've been comparing some of the best games available on iOS over the last year in categories such as action, puzzles, shooters, trivia, and word games, and these were at the top of our lists of free games.Critical Ops: Multiplayer first-person shooter akin to Counter-Strike. Into the Dead 2: First-person running game against zombies. Scale: Incredibly simple yet challenging puzzler in a box. QuizUp: Single or multiplayer trivia game with tons of unique topics. Words with Friends 2: New version with daily prizes, more words, etc.
Paid Games (5)Just like with the free games above, there are some standout games in the action, puzzles, shooters, trivia, and word games categories that we've dug into when it comes to iPhone games. These games won't make you regret a purchase in the App Store, for sure.Death Road to Canada ($10.99): Action-packed zombie basher with great story. Hitman Sniper ($0.99): Stealthy shooting game with great graphics. Monument Valley 2 ($4.99): Optical-illusion puzzle better than the original. Pointless Quiz ($1.99): Test your knowledge of obscure trivia. W.E.L.D.E.R. ($1.99): An oldie-but-goodie word game good for solo play.
Hobbies (6)Some apps can actually help with your real-world endeavors, whether that's a burgeoning hobby or something you've been into for all of your life.IMDb Movies & TV: The end-all, be-all app for movie lovers. Pinterest: A great source for ideas — the internet's home for arts and crafts. Fishbrain: The world's largest crowd-sourced fishing app. BigOven: More than 350,000 recipes to cover all your cooking needs. GrowIt!: Join a large community of gardeners that will help you learn and plan. Sky Guide AR: Experience the sky above you like never before, complete with a widget and Apple Watch integration.
Widgets (3)When you swipe right on your home or lock screen, you can view the Today view which houses all your widgets. By default, you'll see a lot of Apple ones in there, but if you hit "Edit" at the bottom of the page, you can see all of the widgets available that are baked into your other apps, and add them to the view. (You can also use 3D Touch to add widgets.) Some of these apps are useful just for their widgets, while others are great apps themselves with a widget bonus. My Verizon: Lets you see exactly how much data you have left in your cycle. Wifi Widget: Test your network and view and share your password easily. Copied: Keep a clipboard history to save all of the text you've copied recently.
Wallpapers (3)If the stock wallpapers that came with your iPhone aren't cutting it anymore, you could search around on the internet to find images that are perfectly-formatted for your screen — or, you could just grab one of these apps as a source for quality iPhone-friendly backgrounds.Notcho: One of a few different ways to hide the notch on your iPhone X. Vellum: A collection of stunning, hand-picked iPhone wallpapers. WLPPR: Beautiful images of the universe with the option to blur photos before you apply them.
News Alternatives (3)Apple's default news app is absolutely fantastic. But if you're constantly craving content, these next three apps are worth an install. While there may be some overlap with Apple's News app, the sources and curation used in these apps are different, at the very least.Yahoo Newsroom: News from all over with stories you can only find on Yahoo. Google News: Very similar to Apple's News app, but with Google's styling. NPR News: Local and national news, plus live streams of NPR radio stations.Don't Miss: 90+ New Features in iOS 11 for Your iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard
